Almeria set to strengthen promotion hopes with victory over Girona
3202

Second-place Almeria will be looking to keep the pressure on first-place Eibar when they welcome Girona to Andalusia on Sunday night.

Almeria trail Eibar by just a single point in the Segunda Division standings, with third-place Valladolid sitting four points behind.

Meanwhile, Girona find themselves in fifth place – ten points shy of Almeria and six points inside the top six.

Almeria have won more Segunda Division matches than anyone else this season, winning 19 of their 32 encounters.

Having netted 51 goals (1.6 goals per game), the Andalusians are also the top scorers in Spain’s second tier.

On top of that, Almeria boast the second-best defensive record in the league. They have conceded just 28 goals this term – one fewer than Tenerife.

Almeria have lost just one of their last seven Segunda Division games, picking up five wins and one draw along the way.

When you look at the bigger picture, Almeria have lost only two of their previous 20 home games in the league.

On the flip side, Girona head into Sunday’s clash on a three-game winning streak – as well as a four-game unbeaten run.

They thrashed Ibiza 5-1 last time out, meaning they have scored a combined total of ten goals across their past three victories.

It is also worth pointing out that Girona have lost just two of their previous 14 Segunda Division encounters.

Given that five of Girona’s past seven league games have produced over 2.5 goals, Sunday’s clash is destined to be a high-scoring affair.

Head-to-head: Almeria have lost just one of their last five meetings with Girona, picking up two wins and two draws in the process.

It is also worth noting that three of the past six encounters between Almeria and Girona have dished up over 2.5 goals.

Team news: Almeria have a number of injury absentees at the moment, including Juanjo Nieto, Chumi, Daniel Carrico, Ivan Martos and Juan Villar.

As for Girona, they are currently without the injured duo and Dario Sarmiento and Juanpe. Ricard Artero is also away on international duty.

Although Girona have won each of their last three matches, there is no hiding from the fact that Almeria sit ten points ahead of Girona in the table.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Almeria will claim all three points on Sunday – with over 2.5 goals expected.
