On Thursday night, Uruguay and Peru go head-to-head in what could be a vital game in the South American section of World Cup qualifying.
Uruguay are currently in the last automatic qualification berth for Qatar 2022. However, they are just a point clear of their fifth-place opponents, who are in the play-off berth. A home victory would see the Albiceleste book their place at the World Cup.
Uruguay look to be over a poor run of form in qualifying that put their automatic qualification for the World Cup in major doubt at one point. Diego Alonso’s team followed up four straight defeats in qualifying by recording back-to-back victories over Paraguay and Venezuela.
Uruguay’s recent record in home World Cup qualifiers has been hit and miss. However, they have lost just one of their last six games in World Cup qualification.
Of late, their home World Cup qualifiers have been relatively low-scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in five of their last seven qualifiers.
This clash is not exactly do or die for Peru, but they must avoid defeat at least to take the battle for qualification to the final fixture of qualifying.
Not only are they in a battle for fourth place, but they are two points ahead of sixth-place Chile, so a defeat here and a Chile win against Brazil would put Peru out of qualification contention completely.
Peru seems likely to take the fifth spot at least, though, as not only does Chile play Brazil, they also face Uruguay in the final game of qualifying.
The Incas head into this clash on the back of a four-game unbeaten run in World Cup qualification, having recorded three wins and a draw.
Forebet predicts that Uruguay will record a victory in this clash and seal their spot at this year’s World Cup.
