Sunday evening’s clash in the French top flight pits the wits of hosts, Brest, against their high-flying visitors, Marseille, when the two teams face off at the Stade Francis-Le Blé with the hosts looking to climb into the top half of Ligue 1.
Brest currently occupy 12th place in the Ligue 1 standings and this looks a fair reflection of how their campaign has unfolded this season as the hosts have been unable to put together any sort of momentum so far this term although they did string together a run of six wins on the trot earlier in the season between the end of October through to early December.
However, Brest have managed to achieve just a further three victories in their subsequent 10 matches overall in the French top flight, losing five of these games in the process as well, and this has hindered their progress and seemingly shut the door on a possible top five finish this season.
Three defeats in their last five home games has seen Brest fall to losses against Montpellier, Nice and Lorient.
While the bigger picture shows the hosts have won just five of their last 18 home games.
Marseille have slumped to two defeats in their last three matches overall in the domestic top flight with both losses being incurred on home soil at their Stade Orange Vélodrome, losing to Clermont and Monaco respectively.
Marseille have produced a fairly reasonable and consistent sequence of results though by comparison to Brest in recent times.
The visitors have lost just three out of their last 11 matches overall, two of which were the aforementioned defeats at home.
Therefore, it may just suit Marseille to be hitting the road again for this Sunday’s clash at the Stade Francis-Le Blé especially as the visitors have lost just once in their previous nine outings on their travels, while also picking up six wins in the process.
Marseille’s away from has certainly contributed to their current 3rd place standing but an even greater prize could be on offer for the visitors as they trail 2nd placed Nice and a possible Champions League spot by a mere two-point margin ahead of this weekend’s action.
Marseille have lost just one of the previous six meetings against Brest and the visitors look the more likely for the points here as well.
