FC Porto were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage, but new life has been given to them to win European silverware. A 4-3 aggregate win against Lazio in the Europa League playoffs allowed FC Porto to qualify for the competition’s last 16.
On Wednesday night, FC Porto face France’s Lyon in the Europa League last 16 first leg at the Estadio do Dragao. Lyon head into the match following a 4-1 away win against Lorient in Ligue 1. Les Gones are unbeaten in unbeaten in 14 of their last 17 matches in all competitions.
FC Porto are unbeaten in 18 straight matches in all competitions. They have not tasted defeat since losing to Atletico Madrid in the final group stage game of the Champions League. FC Porto are coming off of a 4-2 Primeira win versus Pacos de Ferreira.
These teams have not played in European competition since 2003-04. Although the clubs have met in friendlies since then, those matches should not have any impact on the result of Wednesday’s fixture.
FC Porto’s last four matches in all competitions finished with both teams scoring goals. In addition, three of those four fixtures ended with more than 2.5 goals scored.
Two of Lyon’s last three matches in all competitions finished with both teams finding the back of the net. Two of their last six matches in all competitions ended with over 2.5 goals scored.
Lyon coach Peter Bosz could be without up to five players for the fixture. Defender Sinlay Diomande has an ankle injury and could miss the match. Midfielder Tanguay Ndombele could also miss out due to injury.
Defender Leo Dubois has a knee injury and could miss out. Mathis Rayan Chekri has a broken foot and will miss the next two months of games. Forward Lenny Pintor has an ACL injury and is unlikely to play.
FC Porto coach Sergio Conceicao has just one name on the injury list heading into the fixture. Wilson Manafra has a muscle injury and could miss the game.
Otherwise, FC Porto are in good shape. Striker Evanilson is coming off of a two-goal game versus Pacos and is in excellent form.
Although FC Porto are in great form, they have benefitted from playing poor quality Portuguese teams. FC Porto did not play well in the Champions League and playing versus Lyon should be similar in terms of results.
Les Gones should pick up a win over FC Porto with both teams finding the back of the net and more than 2.5 goals scored.
