Cameroon and Egypt meet for heavyweight AFCON semi-final
8088

On Thursday night, host nation Cameroon come up against record champions Egypt in the second Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.

The Pharaohs have won more AFCON titles than any other team, having lifted the trophy on no fewer than seven occasions.

That said, Cameroon are the second most successful country in AFCON history. They have clinched five titles over the years, with their most recent triumph coming in 2017.

Can the hosts move one step closer to claiming another title on Thursday? Or will Egypt reach yet another final? Let’s find out.

Cameroon have yet to taste defeat in their home AFCON, picking up four wins and a draw on their way to the semi-finals.

After taking seven points from a possible nine to finish atop Group A, they beat Comoros in the round of 16 before seeing off the Gambia in the quarter-finals.

The Indomitable Lions have scored over 1.5 goals in four of their five games during the Africa Cup of Nations, racking up 11 goals in five matches.

However, they have only managed to keep a clean sheet in one of their five outings – conceding a single goal in each of their first four games.

As for Egypt, they lost their opening clash to Nigeria before beating Guinea-Bissau and Sudan to finish second in Group D.

The Pharaohs then beat Ivory Coast on penalties to advance to quarter-finals before coming from behind to dispatch Morocco in the previous round.

Egypt head into the semi-finals on a hugely impressive run, having lost just two of their previous 26 encounters across all competitions.

It is also worth noting that each of Egypt’s past nine AFCON games have produced under 2.5 goals, meaning Thursday’s clash is likely to be a low-scoring affair.

Head-to-head: Cameroon and Egypt have faced each other on 27 occasions in all competitions since 1983. The Indomitable Lions have only managed to beat the Pharaohs six times.

Cameroon have won just one of their last eight meetings with Egypt, suffering five defeats along the way.

Team news: Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi are the tournament’s top scorers, having netted six and five goals, respectively.

It goes without saying that Mohamed Salah is Egypt’s main man. The Liverpool superstar has bagged two goals and one assist so far.

This is destined to be a close-fought between two African giants, meaning we could see Thursday’s game go to extra-time.

Forebet predicts that Cameroon and Egypt will play out a goalless draw inside 90 minutes.
