Two heavyweights of the African game clash in the AFCON round of 16 on Wednesday as Ivory Coast and Egypt meet in Douala.

With seven Africa Cup of Nations titles to their name, Egypt have lifted the trophy on more occasions than any other side.

As for Ivory Coast, they have clinched AFCON crowns over the years. After triumphing in 1992, they went all the way at AFCON 2015.

Ivory Coast finished one point clear at the top of Group E after winning two and drawing one of their three group matches.

After beating Equatorial Guinea 1-0, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Seirra Leone before crushing reigning champions Algeria 3-1.

Nicolas Pepe has been Ivory Coast’s standout performer so far. The Arsenal star bagged two goals and an assist during the group stage.

The Elephants have lost just three of their previous 26 encounters across all competitions, underlining their strength.

On the flip side, Egypt qualified for the last 16 after finishing second in Group D – three points behind Nigeria, who boast a 100% record.

Following a 1-0 loss to Nigeria in their first game, the Pharaohs claimed 1-0 wins over Guinea-Bissau and Sudan to book their spot in the knockouts.

It is worth pointing out that each of Egypt’s past seven Africa Cup of Nations matches have dished up under 2.5 goals.

With the Pharaoh’s low-scoring record in mind, Wednesday’s clash isn’t likely to produce too many goals.

Looking at the bigger picture, Egypt have lost just two of their previous 22 clashes across all competitions.

Head-to-head: Across the past seven meetings between Ivory Coast and Egypt in all competitions, both teams have picked up three wins.

The overall head-to-head record between Ivory Coast and Egypt stands at 11 wins for Egypt, seven wins for Ivory Coast and three draws.

Team news: Ivory Coast’s squad is stacked with household names. Alongside Pepe, Sebastien Haller, Wilfred Zaha, Franck Kessie and Maxwel Cornet are capable of doing some serious damage.

Of course, Mohamed Salah is Egypt’s biggest threat. Ivory Coast will also need to stop Aston Villa’s Trezeguet and Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny.

This clash is destined to go down to the wire. Both sides are among the favourites to lift the trophy, meaning neither team will go down without a fight.

Forebet predicts that Ivory Coast and Egypt will play out a goalless draw inside 90, with extra-time and possibly penalties required to determine the winner.
