Two teams who have had topsy-turvy seasons in 2021/22 meet this Sunday as Empoli welcome Roma to the Carlo Castellani Stadium as 11th meets seventh in this crazy Serie A campaign with both sides still boasting hope of getting into the European spots.
Empoli have been very topsy-turvy in this Serie A season as they sit with eight wins and nine defeats from 22 games along with five draws.
However, given how the club are back in the top flight for the first time in five campaigns, it's fair to say that an 11th-placed position right now is more than acceptable and actually considered a decent turnover thus far for Empoli.
The club were expected to fight for survival down at the bottom this year, but following a start which looked to go exactly in that manner, they have begun to seriously establish themselves as competitors for the top 10, while the 13-point gap on the bottom three should be too much for even them to let go off.
On the other hand, Empoli are currently six points off their seventh-placed opponent's here, and a win for them will ramp up their hopes of finishing within the top eight as both Rome sides struggle for form.
Empoli are, however, winless in their past six games in the league, having drawn with relegation fighters, Venezia and Spezia, while they also took a point off Lazio two weeks ago in a 3-3 game.
Further defeats to AC Milan and Sassuolo saw them concede 12 goals in three games with that Lazio draw in mind, and a defeat to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia has really put Empoli in poor form right now.
As for Roma, it’s been a wild debut season for Jose Mourinho, who, just like in his days at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, seems to fluctuate too much between brilliance and disaster, as shown in their 4-3 loss to Juventus where they led 3-1.
Roma have now made it 11 wins and nine defeats in the league under the ex-Chelsea man and with 36 goals scored and 28 conceded, they are so far proving to be as up-and-down as it gets.
They did manage to beat Cagliari after going three games without a win in the league, and they also managed to defeat Lecce in the Coppa Italia in midweek too.
Forebet predicts this winning form to continue for the Rome side, as the game looks also set to witness over 2.5 goals.
