Sevilla aim to pull three points closer to top of the La Liga table with win at Valencia
Valencia CF vs Sevilla FC - 19/01/2022

Sevilla are just five points off of La Liga leaders Real Madrid ahead of Wednesday night’s game at the Mestalla against Valencia. A win would allow Sevilla to pull within two points of Los Blancos.
La Liga’s title race could be quite spicy in the second half of the season. Sevilla do not play Real Madrid until April, so Julen Lopetegui’s Los Rojiblancos need to continue winning to lift a first La Liga title since 1946.
Valencia will aim to throw a spanner into the works this week when Sevilla arrive at Mestalla. Los Che are 10th in La Liga’s standings after 20 matches.
Valencia are just five points off of La Liga’s top five. A win would give Jose Bordalas’ team the chance to reel in Real Sociedad.
Sevilla are on a five-game winning streak versus Valencia in all competitions. Earlier this season, Los Rojiblancos claimed a home 3-1 win with all four goals scored in the first half.
Papu Gomez and Gonzalo Montiel opened the scoring for Sevilla with goals before the 15-minute mark. Rafa Mir then scored a third on 22 minutes. Hugo Duro pulled a goal back for Valencia on 31 minutes, but that was a close as Los Che got.
Sevilla head into the Wednesday night fixture as La Liga’s most in-form team. Los Rojiblancos took 16 points from the last 18 points available to them. Valencia picked up 10 points from the last 18 available, but they are on a two-game losing streak in La Liga.
Lopetegui is without Joan Jordan who is recovering from a concussion. Jordan was struck with an object over the weekend in a Copa del Rey derby match versus Real Betis. Defender Jules Kounde is a doubt due to a back issue.
Suso and Jesus Navas are nearing returns from injury. The duo could be available to Lopetegui for the trip to Mestalla. Erik Lamela is still ruled out of action with a shoulder injury.
Bordalas has four players likely to miss the game following positive COVID-19 tests. Helder Costa, Denis Cheryshev, Maxi Gomez, and Daniel Wass are both set to miss the game. Wass is about to join Atletico Madrid on a transfer this month and may not play again for Valencia.
Meanwhile, Bordalas could be without Carlos Soler, Gabriel Paulista, and Antonio Latorre. Valencia are on a two-game losing streak. Sevilla, on the other hand, are in form.
Los Rojiblancos should claim a sixth straight win over Valencia while keeping a clean sheet. Expect under 2.5 goals in Sevilla’s win.
