The first leg of Liverpool and Arsenal’s EFL Cup semi-final was postponed last week. The Premier League rivals will play the rescheduled tie at Anfield on Thursday.
Both sides were in FA Cup action on Sunday, enjoying contrasting success. Liverpool claimed an easy 4-1 win over Shrewsbury, while the Gunners suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.
The two sides are separated by seven points in the Premier League table, with third-place Liverpool leading fourth-place Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have lost just one of their previous 13 matches across all competitions, having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leicester last month.
Thanks to an eight-game winning streak across November and December, the Reds have won ten of their past 13 clashes.
It is worth noting that Liverpool have scored over 1.5 goals in five of their last six matches in all competitions, netting over 2.5 goals on three occasions in that time.
Mohamed Salah has bagged a whopping 23 goals and nine assists in 26 outings across all competitions this season, underlining his importance to the team.
However, the Egyptian King is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations and will be sorely missed by the Reds.
As for Arsenal, they were dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday – going down to second-tier side Nottingham Forest.
The Gunners were poor at the City Ground. Despite seeing 67% possession, they failed to register a single shot on target.
That’s said, Mikel Arteta’s men have improved in recent months. They have only lost five of their last 21 matches across all competitions.
Arsenal also enjoyed a five-match winning streak before suffering back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Forest.
Head-to-head: Liverpool have avoided defeat in each of their last five meetings with Arsenal, picking 3-0 and 4-0 wins in the previous two encounters.
When you look at the bigger picture, the Gunners have only managed to win one of their last 16 games against the Reds.
Team news: Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita are away on AFCON duty. Meanwhile, Nat Phillips, Divock Origi and Harvey Elliott are injured.
Arsenal also have three players at the Africa Cup of Nations – Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.
Given the historic high-scoring nature of this fixture, plenty of goals are expected when Arsenal visit Anfield on Thursday.
