Espanyol to claim second straight La Liga win at Elche’s expense
RCD Espanyol vs Elche CF - 10/01/2022
5831
Espanyol are on a good run of form in La Liga ahead of this weekend’s clash with relegation-threatened Elche. The Parakeets are 11th in La Liga with 10 points separating them from the bottom three.
Vincente Moreno’s team earned promotion from La Liga 2 at the end of last season. Now, Espanyol are an outside contender for the La Liga top six and European tournament qualification.
Elche are just outside of the relegation zone thanks to a better goal difference than Alaves. The Green Ones are winless in three straight games ahead of this weekend’s clash in Barcelona.
Earlier this season, Espanyol and Elche played a wild four-goal game that finished 2-2. Elche’s Lucas Boye put the team in front after 23 minutes.
Espanyol got back into the game with goals from Manu Morlanes and Raul de Tomas in the 51st and 52nd minute respectively. Dario Benedetto scored a late equaliser for Elche as the game ended level.
The Parakeets have been excellent at home this season posting a record of 6W-2D-1L. Moreno’s team has scored 14 goals and conceded seven times.
Elche’s away record has been abysmal. They have a road record of 1W-2D-7L with 17 goals conceded and nine scored.
Boye leads Elche in goals with five while Benedetto, who scored against Espanyol earlier this campaign, has added two.
Elche have scored the fifth-fewest goals in La Liga this term. Espanyol are led in goals Raul de Tomas with nine. Javi Puado is the best in goals with just three.
Moreno could be without three players as Joan Garcia and Fernando Calero both tested positive for COVID-19. David Lopez could be available following a knee injury.
Elche’s list of potential absentees is longer. A COVID-19 outbreak has six players likely to miss the game. Lucas Perez, Enzo Roco, Boye, Ivan Marcone, Raul Guti, and Benedetto all tested positive and will likely miss the match.
Espanyol have far fewer issues going into the game with Elche. Thanks to their form and the lack of positive COVID-19 cases, Espanyol should claim a second straight La Liga win.
The Parakeets took nine points from the last 18 points available to them. Elche took just five points from the last 18 available.
In addition, Espanyol are unbeaten in four of their last six games with Elche. The Parakeets should keep their good form going with a win over Elche.
The La Liga rivals should combine for over 2.5 goals once more as they both score. This time, Espanyol will win.
