Sporting Lisbon are on a seven-match winning streak against Portimonense in all competitions ahead of Wednesday’s match at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The Lions of Lisbon are seeking an eighth straight win over their Primeira Liga rival.
A win for Ruben Amorim’s team would send it into first place ahead of FC Porto’s match against Benfica on Thursday. Sporting Lisbon are currently second due to an inferior goal difference despite being level on 41 points with FC Porto.
Portimonense are sixth in the Primeira Liga standings ahead of matchday 16. Coach Paulo Sergio’s team is on a two-match unbeaten streak ahead of the trip to the capital. Portimonense have taken 24 points from a possible 45 points this season. Ten points currently separate Portimonense from the top three.
Sporting Lisbon are the in-form team in the Primeira Liga. They took 18 points from the last 18 points available to them in the division. Just one goal was allowed by Amorim’s team during that six-match span. The Lions scored 13 goals and allowed one during their last six matches.
Portimonense, on the other hand, collected 10 points from the last 18 points available in the league. They posted a zero-goal difference with seven goals against and seven goals for. Portimonense have scored the league’s fifth-fewest goals this season with 15.
Aylton Boa Morte leads Portimonense in scoring with three goals. Carlinhos and Beto have added two apiece. Other than the seven goals scored by the trio, Portimonense have struggled for consistent goalscorers.
Sporting Lisbon have not had any trouble scoring goals. They have posted the league’s third-best total with 27 goals. Pedro Goncalves and Nuno Santos have combined to scored eight goals (four goals apiece).
The Lions’ defence is the best in the Primeira Liga. Amorim’s team has allowed a mere five goals in 15 matches. Each of Sporting Lisbon’s last two league games finished as wins to nil. Last season, Sporting Lisbon posted two 2-0 wins versus Portimonense.
Portimonense coach Sergio has no fresh injury issues and will take a fully fit team to the capital for Wednesday’s match. Amorim, on the other hand, will be minus a few players.
Sporting Lisbon’s Luis Neto is ruled out due to a suspension. Fellow defender Zou Feddal is a doubt due to a muscle injury. Defender Ruben Vinagre has an ankle injury and is a doubt. Forward Jovane Cabral is also a doubt thanks to a knee issue.
Portimonense are playing well this season and they very well could get on the scoresheet post-Christmas against Sporting Lisbon. However, Portimonense should ultimately fall to a loss on Wednesday as Sporting Lisbon post a win and move into first place.
The midweek fixture should see over 2.5 goals as both teams find the back of the net in the Portuguese capital.
