Chelsea are on a two-match winless streak in the Premier League ahead of their matchday 19 fixture with Aston Villa. The Blues drew their last two league fixtures and are third in the division. Six points separate Chelsea from first-place Manchester City going into Boxing Day.
Aston Villa are 10th in the league table ahead of Boxing Day. Six points separate the Villains from the top five. A European qualification place is possible for Steven Gerrard’s team. However, the Villains will need to be consistent in the second half and pick up points on a regular basis.
Gerrard has been hit by a coronavirus outbreak at the club. He may need to field a number of fringe players to have a full squad to play against the Blues. As it stands, up to nine players could miss the match.
Anwar El Ghazi, Morgan Sansone, Keinan Davis, and Jed Steer are the most recent played to test positive for coronavirus. Meanwhile, Marvelous Nakamba, Bertrand Traore, and Leon Bailey are ruled out due to injuries.
Thomas Tuchel has recently dealt with a coronavirus outbreak at Stamford Bridge. Romelu Lukaku could be available after a bout of the virus. Callum Hudson-Odoi could also be available. Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Ben Chilwell are likely to miss the match due to positive coronavirus tests, however.
The Chelsea manager is also hoping to have the trio of Hakim Ziyech, Andreas Christensen, and Ruben-Loftus-Cheek available following injuries. Having a full squad should help Chelsea reignite their title hopes.
Chelsea took nine points from the last 18 points available to them. The defence has suddenly become leaky as Chelsea conceded eight goals across those six matches. They scored nine times during that same timeframe.
Aston Villa are in form under Gerrard. The decision to sack Dean Smith and hire Gerrard from Rangers was the right decision. The Villains took 12 points from the last 18 points available to them. They outscored opponents 9-5.
These teams have played twice already this season with Chelsea posting a win and draw. Their Premier League encounter finished 3-0 thanks to two goals from Lukaku on either side of a Mateo Kovacic goal.
The teams’ second meeting was in the EFL Cup. A 1-1 draw was decided on penalties as Chelsea progressed.
Based on the Blues’ record this season and Aston Villa’s injury and coronavirus cases, Chelsea should post another league win against Aston Villa. The Blues should get the defence back on track posting a win to nil versus the Villains.
