Steven Gerrard returns to his old stopping ground of Anfield as the Aston Villa manager leads the Birmingham club up against ex-club Liverpool on Saturday.

The Liverpool legend has won three of four matches in charge of the Villains, but comes up against a difficult test on Merseyside.

Liverpool head into matchday 16 in second place in the Premier League. The Reds are coming off of a dramatic 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on matchday 15 as Divock Origi scored a last-gasp goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s team is just one point behind of Manchester City and could go top of the table with a win and Manchester City dropping points to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Aston Villa defeated Leicester City 2-1 last weekend and moved into 10th place. Aston Villa won two of their last six games in all competitions versus the Reds. Last season, Aston Villa shocked Liverpool at Villa Park 7-2.

Liverpool have won four consecutive Premier League games. Klopp’s team took 13 points from the last 18 on offer in the Premier League. The Anfielders outscored opponents 17-6 across their six matches.

Aston Villa have lost on each of their last three trips to Anfield. The Villains are in decent form having taken nine points from the last 18 on offer. They scored eight goals while conceding nine to their last six opponents.

Gerrard’s Villains have taken six from 21 points possible away from Villa Park this season. Liverpool have collected 15 points from 21 possible at home. The Reds are undefeated at Anfield in 2021-22 in all competitions and are on a two-match home winning streak.

Klopp rotated the side heavily for Liverpool’s Champions League matchday 6 win against AC Milan. He should play the same team that started against Wolverhampton Wanderers with eight players restored to the starting XI.

Three players are currently on the injury list at Anfield. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are long-term absentees, and will stay on the sidelines. Forward Roberto Firmino is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Gerrard is without forward Bertrad Traore and winger Leon Bailey due to injury. Ex-Liverpool player Danny Ings is a doubt due an injury. Trezeguet is also ruled out of the match. The good news for Gerrard is that Matt Targett could be fit to play.

Liverpool have won three consecutive matches versus Aston Villa at Anfield. The Reds are in great form and should claim another home win against Aston Villa. Expect the Reds to score goals with over 2.5 goal going into the back of the net.

Mohamed Salah has 20 goals in all competitions and is a good bet to get on the score sheet four a 14th time in the league this season.
