Mallorca host Celta Vigo on Friday night to kick off the weekend in La Liga. The Islanders go into the weekend unbeaten in two straight matches. On matchday 16, Mallorca shocked reigning champions Atletico Madrid with a 2-1 win in the capital.
Celta Vigo go into matchday 17 against Mallorca in 14th place. A 2-1 loss last weekend against Valencia ended a four-match unbeaten streak for the Sky Blues.
Eduardo Coudet’s team is four points ahead of the relegation zone in La Liga. Mallorca are seven points above the drop zone. With both sides near enough to the relegation zone, Friday night’s game can be considered a six-point affair.
Mallorca were promoted from La Liga 2 at the end of last season. These teams last played during the 2019-20 La Liga campaign. Mallorca went unbeaten that season against Celta Vigo despite being relegated at the end of it. The Islanders drew 2-2 at Vigo before winning 5-1 at home.
The Spanish rivals are in similar form going into the weekend. Mallorca took seven points from the last 18 available. They were outscored 8-7 by their last six opponents. Celta Vigo took six points from the last 18 available. The Sky Blues were outscored 9-7 across those six matches.
Coudet has three players on the Celta Vigo injury list ahead of the match. Midfielder Augusto Solari has a muscle injury which could keep him out of the game. Forwards Iago Aspas and Thiago Galhardo are both ruled out of the match and won’t be back until the end of the month due to injuries.
Mallorca manager Luis García Plaza could be without forward Lago Junior due to a muscle strain. Salva Sevilla is also a doubt due to a muscle problem. Forward Matthew Hoppe is ruled out until the end of the month, but Antonio Raillo could be fit to play.
The Islanders have the joint second-most draws this season in La Liga with seven from 16 matches. Celta Vigo have drawn four of their 16 matches with three of those stalemates coming in their last five games.
Friday night’s game should be an evenly matched fixture with the final result being a draw. Neither side will be able to get the upper hand as the match ends in a score draw. The point will help both teams, but won’t move them too far away from the bottom three.
