Southampton and Leicester braced for low-key stalemate

Southampton will be hoping to avoid three straight defeats in the Premier League when they welcome Leicester City to St. Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday.

The Saints have slipped to fifteenth in the table and now find themselves just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Leicester sit tenth – four points ahead of Southampton but only five points outside the top four.

Southampton were crushed 4-0 by Liverpool on Saturday. They saw just 35% possession at Anfield and only managed three attempts on target.

That defeat means the Saints have lost each of their previous two Premier League games, having suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norwich two weekends ago.

It is no secret that Southampton are struggling for goals this season. In fact, they are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League.

It is worth noting, however, that Southampton boast a better defensive record than ten of their Premier League rivals.

Although the Saints haven’t made a terrible start to the campaign, they will be eager to discover some consistency and start moving up the table sooner rather than later.

As for Leicester, they hammered Watford 4-2 on Sunday. Jamie Vardy bagged a brace, while James Maddison and Ademola Lookman also got on the scoresheet.

Not only did the Foxes enjoy 57% possession last time out, but they also racked up 18 shots – eight of which were on target.

It is worth pointing out that Leicester have only managed to win one of their previous four Premier League matches.

However, they have lost just one of their last five encounters across all competitions – picking up two wins and two draws thanks to a positive Europa League run.

Head-to-head: Southampton have only managed to win one of their last five meetings with Leicester in all competitions – and two of their previous ten.

Since the Foxes’ memorable 9-0 thrashing of Southampton back in 2019, they have picked up two clean-sheet wins over the south coast side.

Team news: Southampton will be without the injured Stuart Armstrong on Wednesday, while Moussa Djenepo, Ibrahima Diallo and Jack Stephens are also doubts.

Leicester currently have four injury absentees – James Justin, Ricardo Pereira, Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana.

Although Leicester sit five places ahead of Southampton, there are only four points between the teams in the standings.

For that reason, Forebet predicts that Southampton will hold Leicester to a low-scoring draw on the south coast.
