Sporting CP to Fall Closer to the Europa League by Losing to Dortmund
6924

Sporting Lisbon and Borussia Dortmund will meet in a vital clash in Group C where the Portuguese champions will battle it out with the German giants for what looks like second spot as Ajax continue their lead at the top of the table.

Both Sporting and Dortmund have experienced very similar fates so far in the Champions League with two wins each followed by two losses and no draws so far.

In fact, the only thing that separates either side is the goal difference with both sides seeing goals go in their net at a slightly alarming rate.

The Primeira Liga side do have one of the worst goal differences in the Champions League for a team sitting third, which stems right back to the start of the campaign when they were demolished by Ajax 5-1 when Sebastian Haller scored an extraordinary four goals in the game.

It does, however, mean the Europa League finish is on for them.

Now, the club sit with nine goals scored and seven conceded and subsequently trail Dortmund’s goal difference by +6, but in the Champions League, goal difference is secondary and things are first judged on head-to-head, meaning Sporting must win this game.

Back on matchday two, the Black and Yellow would beat Rúben Amorim’s side 1-0 thanks to a goal from Donyell Malen, which as of now, is the only difference between Dortmund sitting second and them in third.

A draw would not be good enough for them to overtake the German side, and only a win avoids Europa League football right now.

A benefit for the Portuguese outfit is the fact that Erling Haaland remains sidelined with an injury which does force in Malen once more.

Indeed, he did score against them last time out, however, the Dutchman has experienced a torrid time at the club thus far, with his goal against Sporting being only his second in 17 appearances since switching PSV Eindhoven for the Bundesliga.

In fact, Malen’s other goal was last time out against Stuttgart in a 2-1 win, which actually got Dortmund back within one point of Bayern Munich. Sporting, on the other hand, are level on points with Porto in pursuit of defending their title, only trailing their rivals by goal difference.

Given Dortmund’s exceptional form in front of goal and how not many in Europe can match them, Forebet are predicting that BVB will get the job done here in a game that sees under 2.5 goals.
