Atlético Madrid Expected to Lose Further Ground on Their La Liga Title Against Osasuna
2481

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid will welcome Osasuna to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium this weekend with the two clubs experiencing contrasting starts to their 2021/22 season compared to their usual standards.

Ahead of the game, the champions are five points adrift of league leaders Real Sociedad but they do have a game in hand over them, and should they win that tie, would go back within two points of the top spot.

At the same time, the club are four points behind Sevilla and Real Madrid early on in the campaign and can’t afford to drop any lower.

What has been the difference in Atletico Madrid’s weaker title charge this campaign compared to last is their defensive record. In fact, they let in just 25 goals in the league all last season and have already let in more than half of that (13) before the Osasuna clash, with only 12 games played.

Diego Simeone’s usual defensive brilliance has seemingly been compromised as they have registered too many score draws. Now, following a wild 3-3 draw with Valencia, they have now drawn five times in the league and only won one of their past three games with the others seeing the points shared.

Other draws saw them lose two vital points in the 99th minute against Levante and also come from behind against the current league leaders, Sociedad.

Atletico's score draws have also meant, however, that they've seen a lot of goals on their side too as they scored three against Valencia, two against Sociedad and even beat fifth-placed Real Betis 3-0.

When all is considered, however, it has been a poor defence of their title so far and they simply need to start keeping more clean sheets, which was ultimately the difference as they won the title last season.

As for Osasuna, they are one of Europe’s surprise packages so far this campaign as they sit in seventh, have won five, drawn four and lost four too. Compare this to their constant fight for survival down at the bottom last season, and the Osasuna fans will take this current standing in a heartbeat.

In fact, they have only conceded four more goals than the usual defensive excellence of Simeone thus far, but their only slight downfall has been their lack of goals with only 14 being scored after 13 games. Nevertheless, every point they gain in the top half right now is a positive one.

Forebet are predicting a game that will see under 2.5 goals here and a draw as there isn’t too much separating them on the form front and within the two defensive records.
