Atalanta will look to resume their solid sequence of results in the Italian top flight on Saturday afternoon when they play host to bottom half outfit, Spezia, at their Gewiss Stadium following the international break.
Prior to the break, Atalanta not only lifted themselves up into 4th place in the Serie A standings with a 2-1 win away from home at Cagliari but this victory also extended Atalanta’s unbeaten run in the Italian top flight to five matches overall.
Three away wins on the trot at Empoli 4-1, Sampdoria 3-1 and Cagliari 2-1 have been complemented by picking up points in draws with Udinese and Lazio and the hosts will no doubt be keen to extend this unbeaten run this weekend.
The bigger picture shows that Atalanta have suffered just three defeats in their 12 matches so far this season while the hosts have lost just these three games in their last 24 matches overall in the Italian top flight.
Spezia eased their relegation fears last time out in Serie A when they registered a 1-0 home win against Torino and this result helped lift the visitors up into 16th place and two places above the bottom three.
The visitors had previously failed to win their preceding three games in Serie A.
They suffered defeats against Sampdoria and Fiorentina along with a draw with Genoa and league wins in general have been hard to come by for Spezia as the visitors have managed to pick up just three wins in their 12 matches to date.
Two of Spezia’s three wins have been collected on home turf at their Stadio Alberto Picco with victories over Salernitana and Torino but the visitors have won just once on the road so far this term.
A 2-1 win away at Venezia has been Spezia’s only highlight on their travels so far in this campaign but this rare success has been swamped by four defeats already which includes losses at Lazio 6-1, Verona 4-0, Sampdoria 2-1 and a 3-0 loss at Fiorentina and these do not bode well for Spezia’s trip to Atalanta this Saturday.
The previous meeting between these two sides resulted in a 3-1 home win for Atalanta and a similar outcome could unfold here this Saturday.
