South Africa lead Confederation of African Football World Cup qualifying Group G, but Ghana are breathing down their neck. South Africa have taken 13 points from 15 on offer and sit three points ahead of Ghana in qualifying going into Saturday’s make or break fixture.

On Sunday, South Africa visit Ghana on the final day of Group G qualifying in Cape Coast in a winner-take-all fixture. Ghana not only have to win the match, but they must over turn a goal difference of –2 to finish in first place in the group.

Ghana and South Africa have played twice in 2021. They first met in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with the match in March finishing 1-1. Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus opened the scoring on 49 minutes. South Africa’s Percy Tau equalised just two minutes later as the match ended level.

The teams’ match in World Cup qualifying finished 1-0 in favour of South Africa. Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored in the 83rd minute to give South Africa the win. In both matches played by Ghana and South Africa this year, all three goals were scored in the second half.

Ghana and South Africa have played 15 times previously in all competitions. The South Africans have edged the head-to-head against Ghana with 5W-6D-4L.

Coach Milovan Rajevac is trying to get Ghana back to the World Cup after they missed the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russia. He won’t have the services of Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey for the fixture. The oft-injured player is out once more with an injury.

Roma’s Felix Afena-Gyan is also out with an injury and isn’t a part of the current Ghana squad. Jordan Ayew has scored 18 goals for Ghana and will likely lead the attack. His brother, Andre Ayew, could receive his 100th cap against South Africa.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has a squad mostly made up of players from domestic teams. Just three players in the squad play outside of South Africa.

The South Africans are on a 13-match unbeaten streak. They defeated Zimbabwe on Thursday in Group G play, 1-0, thanks to a goal from Teboho Mokoena. Despite having a squad mostly made up of domestic players, Broos is getting results.

Ghana drew 1-1 with Ethiopia on the same day, allowing South Africa to put three points between them. Andre Ayew’s first-half goal was cancelled out by a second-half Ethiopia strike.

Saturday’s match should see a close fixture between Ghana and South Africa. It should be low scoring with under 2.5 goals as the teams draw. The stalemate won’t help Ghana’s World Cup qualification chances as South Africa win the group.
