Uganda seeking massive three points versus Kenya in Africa World Cup 2022 qualifying

Uganda are chasing Group E rival Mali for automatic qualification to the third round of Africa World Cup 2022 qualification. On Wednesday, Uganda host Kenya seeking a massive three points and the chance to move above Mali in the table.

Coach Milutin Sredojević’s team are on eight points from 12 on offer in Group E. Their opponents on Wednesday, Kenya, have already been eliminated from qualification to the third round of the tournament.

Kenya have taken two points from 12 on offer in Group E. Coach Engin Firat’s team has struggled in qualification, but could end it on a high note by taking points off of Uganda – thus hurting the Ugandans’ chances of third-round qualification.

Uganda visited Kenya in Nairobi in September for the reverse fixture. The match ended nil-nil with neither team able to make the breakthrough. Kenya are on a four-match winless streak with their last two games both finishing in losses.

In contrast, Uganda are unbeaten in four straight matches. The team has collected two wins on the bounce with identical 1-0 wins over Rwanda, home and away.

Striker Fahad Bayo scored both of Uganda’s goals against Rwanda in October. Bayo should get the chance to impress once more this month. The striker plays his club football for Israel’s FC Ashdod.

Bayo could compete for the starting No. 9 role with Al-Ittihad's Emmanuel Okwi. Okwi has scored 26 international goals in 86 appearances.

Kenya have failed to score in their last two games. They last got a goal against Rwanda in World Cup qualifying in September. Abdul Rwatubyaye scored the team’s most recent goal. Rwatubyaye plays club football in Macedonia for FK Shkupi, showing the diversity of clubs' players for both teams compete for.

Neither Uganda nor Kenya are powerhouses when it comes to African football. Both international squads are made up of players competing for teams around the globe, but neither has a player currently playing in the top European leagues.

The majority of Uganda’s players play domestically, while Kenya’s squad is mostly made up of players competing in various African leagues.

Uganda and Kenya have played 76 times over the course of the teams’ histories. The Ugandans have posted a record of 30W-24D-22L over the course of those 76 matches between the teams.

The teams’ last three games, however, all finished as draws. Meanwhile, the last five fixtures between the sides ended with under 2.5 goals scored.

Like the team’s five previous fixtures, Wednesday’s match should be short on goalscoring. In fact, it should finish nil-nil, just like the reverse fixture back in September. In the end, the draw could stop Uganda from progressing to the next round.
