Newtown seek to close gap at the top of Welsh Premier League with win against Bala Town

Newtown head into midweek Welsh Premier League action sitting in third place and 10 points behind first-place The New Saints.

Manager Chris Hughes’ team is coming off of a matchday 12 win against Cefn Druids. Newtown won 5-0 away from home as Aaron Williams scored a hat-trick and Nick Rushton bagged a brace.

Bala Town are up next for Newtown. The visitors are sixth in the Welsh Premier League standings. Bala Town are in awful form ahead of the fixture on Tuesday night. They have failed to win their last five matches in the league with back-to-back matches ending in losses.

The Lakesiders have taken just five points from the last 18 on offer in the league. They were outscored 12-7 by opponents over the course of those six fixtures.

Newtown took 15 points from their last 18 on offer. They won five of their last six league fixtures conceding just two times. Newtown scored 14 goals over the course of those six games with five of those scores coming versus Cefn Druids last time out.

Hughes’ team has been up and down at Latham Park. They have taken nine points from 15 on offer with 11 goals scored and seven conceded.

Bala Town may be out of form, but they have played well on the road. Ten points from 18 have been taken by Bala Town on their travels this season.

The Lakesiders have scored just five goals while conceding four times away from home. Manager Colin Caton has watched the team to lose two straight road games, however.

Bala Town won both matches against Newtown last season. The Lakesiders won the league fixtures by a combined 5-1 score. They went to Latham Park a season ago and claimed a 2-0 win. This season should be far different, however.

Newtown are in excellent form and a win could pull them three points closer to league leaders The New Saints. It is unlikely that The New Saints will drop points in midweek, however. The league leaders will face off with 11th-place Aberystwyth.

Bala Town have won four straight matches versus Newtown in the Welsh Premier League. However, based on Newtown’s good form and Bala Town’s poor form, the Lakesiders’ winning streak should end.

Newtown’s last three victories came courtesy of wins to nil. The Robins should claim another win to nil on Tuesday night with under 2.5 goals scored. Newtown should claim another win and keep their hope of pulling closer to first-place The New Saints alive.
