Marseille expected to inflict Europa League defeat on Galatasaray
5143

Galatasaray will be looking to maintain their winning start to the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League campaign when they face Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Thursday.

The Turkish side currently sit two points clear at the top of Group E after beating Lazio 1-0 in their opening game.

Marseille, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Lokomotiv Moscow on Matchday 1. As a result, they find themselves second in Group E.

The French side enjoyed a whopping 74% possession and chalked up 19 shots against Lokomotiv Moscow a fortnight ago.

Cengiz Under gave Marseille the lead just before the hour mark. However, the Russians equalised on 89 minutes, despite having ten men.

Back on home soil, Marseille have only lost one of their seven Ligue 1 games this term – picking up four wins and two draws in the process.

They have also scored 14 league goals this season (two goals per game), making them the third-highest scorers in the French top-flight.

On the flip side, Galatasaray kicked off their Europa League campaign with a clean-sheet victory over Lazio.

The Turkish side have now lost just one of their previous eight matches in the Europa League and have scored at least one goal in each outing during that period.

When it comes to the Super Lig, however, Galatasaray have made an indifferent start to their domestic season.

They have only managed to win three of their seven league games this term, registering two draws and two losses along the way.

Not only have Galatasaray scored ten Super Lig goals this season, but they have also conceded on ten occasions.

Head-to-head: This will be the first competitive meeting between Marseille and Galatasaray, meaning there are no previous results to assess for this matchup.

Team news: Marseille currently have one player on the sidelines, with Boubacar Kamara out with a thigh injury.

As for Galatasaray, they will be without injured quartet Omar Elabdellaoui, Arda Turan, Sacha Boey and Baris Yilmaz on Thursday.

Given that Marseille have made a better start to the season than Galatasaray, the home side will be confident of claiming all three points.

On top of that, the French side are averaging two goals per game this term, so they are likely to exploit the visitors’ leaky defence.

Taking all that into consideration, Forebet predicts that Marseille will score over 2.5 goals on their way to victory on Thursday.
