Sporting Gijon will aim to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 Segunda Division season when they face Girona at Montilivi on Friday night.
Gijon have picked up two wins and one draw from their opening three games and sit third in the table as a result.
Meanwhile, Girona find themselves twelfth in the standings after taking four points from a possible nine so far.
Girona began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Amorebieta before securing a goalless draw with Las Palmas.
However, they were beaten 2-1 by Ponferradina last weekend, despite seeing 64% of the ball and recording 11 shots – seven of which were on target.
Thanks to a solid end to the previous campaign, Girona have only lost three of their last 21 league matches.
But, having failed to make it to La Liga after failing last season’s promotion play-offs, they have struggled to get going this term.
Sporting Gijon, on the other hand, missed out on the play-offs by just two points last season but have started the new campaign in red-hot form.
After beating Burgos 1-0 on the opening weekend, they drew 0-0 with Tenerife before beating Mirandes 2-1 last time out.
It is worth pointing out that Gijon have only lost two of their previous 11 matches in the Segunda Division.
That said, they have failed to score a single goal in any of their last six league games, meaning they could struggle to find the back of the net on Friday.
Let’s not forget that each of Gijon’s previous eight Segunda Division matches away from home have produced under 2.5 goals.
Head-to-head: The recent head-to-head record between these two sides is tight, with Girona winning three of the last 11 meetings and Gijon winning four.
Still, Girona have only managed to win one of the last seven meetings – recording four draws and two losses in that time.
Team news: Girona have one injury concern at the moment, with centre-back Santiago Bueno sidelined due to a knee problem.
Sporting Gijon currently have no players unavailable, meaning manager David Gallego is likely to stick with the same team that has performed well so far.
Considering each of the previous six meetings between the teams have produced under 2.5 goals, we are set for a low-scoring encounter on Friday.
Forbet predicts that Sporting Gijon will extend their unbeaten start to the season, although Girona should be good enough to snatch a point.
