The French Ligue 1 action this weekend actually starts on Friday night with this upcoming clash between Lorient and Monaco at the Stade Yves Allainmat with both teams coming into this encounter on the back of draws on the opening day of the season.

Lorient arguably grabbed the slightly better point out of the two clubs as they held Saint-Etienne to a 1-1 draw at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard which in turn helped extend Lorient’s unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions, although the majority of these games were pre-season friendlies.

Nevertheless, Lorient finished last season’s Ligue 1 campaign with a 2-1 home win against Metz which was followed by a 1-1 draw away from home at Strasbourg, and along with a solid pre-season which saw the hosts unbeaten in five matches, Lorient look in reasonable shape ahead of Friday night.

The draw has also featured on a regular basis in recent times as well, with four of Lorient’s last eight matches ending in stalemate, while the previous meeting between Lorient and Monaco ended in a 2-2 draw back in February this year.

Onto Monaco, and they too also drew their opening game of the new Ligue 1 season last weekend as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nantes but Monaco were also in action in midweek in the Champions League on Tuesday night where they recorded a convincing 3-1 home win against Czech Republic side, Sparta Prague.

This means that Monaco progress through to the play-offs in the Champions League following a 5-1 win on aggregate over their Czech Republic counterparts and the visitors will also be in confident mood approaching this fixture on Friday night.

Results away from home have also been impressive where Monaco have been concerned as the visitors have suffered just the one defeat out of their last 13 matches in all competitions on their travels, while also racking up a total of 10 wins during this period as well.

Nine of these 13 away matches have also seen Monaco keep a clean sheet which also goes in their favour but there’s perhaps a slight question mark over match fitness as they were in action in midweek while Lorient have rested.

Honours were even in the previous meeting and this could also be the outcome on Friday night.
