The first major European silverware of the season will be decided on Wednesday the 11th of August as Chelsea meet Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup.
This is the traditional meeting between the winner of the Champions League and Europa League from the previous season and the match will be played at Windsor Park Belfast.
Chelsea come into the match having played a series of friendly matches in preseason, the most recent of which was against Tottenham Hotspur on the 4th of August. Hakim Ziyech was the star man for The Blues as he scored two goals to give Chelsea a commanding lead. However, Spurs responded well and scored two goals of their own as Chelsea made wholesale changes in the second half.
This will be the fifth appearance in the UEFA Super Cup for Chelsea but they have won the trophy only once. The victory came back in 1998 against Real Madrid and their most recent appearance in the competition was against Liverpool in 2019. The match ended 2-2 and after extra-time, the game went to penalties and it was Liverpool who came out on top.
This is a big season for Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea were not expected to win the Champions league last season but having done so, the pressure will be on to succeed in the Premier League. Victory in this game will not be key to that success but will be a good start to the season.
Villarreal are making their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup having won the Europa League for the first time in their history last season. The Spanish club defeated Manchester United in the final, with the game going to penalties following a 1-1 draw.The Yellow Submarine were the outsiders going into that match, just as they will be going into this fixture and Unai Emery will have no problem with that fact.
Villarreal not only defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final last season but they also beat Arsenal at the semi-final stage of the competition, so facing English opposition in the UEFA Super Cup will not faze the club.
Villarreal’s most recent match was on the 7th of August against Leeds United and it ended in a 2-2 draw. Villarreal have played 6 friendlies in preseason but have failed to record a victory.
Looking ahead to the team news and Chelsea have yet to play Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Thiago Silva, and Mason Mount in preseason, so it will be interesting to see if any of these players are selected for this game.
Villarreal will definitely be without central defender Pau Torres having been involved with Spain at the Olympic Games and the European Championship. Gerard Moreno featured for Spain at the European Championship so may have his minutes managed plus Samuel Chukwueze is injured.
Given the facts, we expect a tense encounter this Wednesday which will most likely end in a draw, with extra time and possible penalties needed to decide the winner in the UEFA Super Cup.
