Shakhtar Donetsk to defeat Genk in UCL third qualifying round second leg

Shakhtar Donetsk are a small step away from the Champions League playoff round.

The Miners are a goal up on Genk in the teams’ Champions League third qualifying round. Now, Roberto De Zerbi’s team just need to hang onto their aggregate lead to progress.

Genk manager John van den Brom will be ruing the team’s second half performance in the first leg. The Belgian team opened the scoring in the first half through Paul Onuachu. Their least lasted nearly 30 minutes until Shakhtar Donetsk’s Tete scored a penalty in the 63rd minute.

With just nine minutes to play, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alan Patrick scored to give the Ukranian team the win and edge in the two-legged series. De Zerbi needs his team to play the full 90 minutes like they did the second half to fully see off Genk.

While the Miners won the first leg against Genk, the Ukrainian club lost at the weekend in the Premier League 2-1 to Olexandriya. It was a surprise defeat for the club.

The near win in the Champions League third qualifying round first leg may have kickstarted Genk. The Belgians defeated Kortrijk at the weekend, 2-1.

Onuachu scored a second goal of the season – he now has two in two games – and Daniel Munoz tallied the winner. Genk had to come from a goal down against Kortriijk to win the match with two second half goals.

De Zerbi will still with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. The club recently signed Brazilian centre-back Marlon. He should find a place in the team’s back four. Marlon was rested at the weekend.

Serhiy Kryvtsov is available to play once again following a knee injury. He is in line to start along with Vitao and Mykola Matviyenko. Winger Manor Solomon was substituted at half-time against Genk in the first leg.

Solomon did not play at the weekend against Oleksandriya. Pedrinho or Mykhailo Mudryk could start for Shakhtar Donetsk with Lassina Traore in attack.

Genk striker Onuachu is back in form with two goals in two games. He is should start the match unless something occurs in the build-up to the match. Winger Junya Ito is also expected to start for Genk. Theo Bongonda should start on the opposite flank. Simen Juklerod is ruled out with a muscle injury.

Shakhtar Donetsk overcame an early goal versus Genk in the first leg. Even if the Miners go down a goal, they should come back to win the fixture. Shakhtar Donetsk and Genk should both score and tally over 2.5 goals.
