Luzern face tough start against Young Boys
3512

Luzern face a tough season-opener against last season’s Swiss Super League title-winners, Young Boys, on Saturday evening despite holding home advantage at their swissporarena ground.

Luzern achieved a modest mid-table finish of 5th place at the end of last season’s Super League campaign with the majority of their success being achieved on home turf at their swissporarena, winning seven of their total of 12 wins in their own backyard.

However, despite losing their final two matches of the Super League season on the trot, being handed defeats by Young Boys 5-2 away from home and a 2-1 loss at home to Lugano, Luzern lifted the Schweizer Pokal cup with a 3-1 victory over St Gallen which saw them qualify for this season’s Europa Conference League.

Luzern have also produced some promising results in their pre-season preparations, gaining wins against Winterthur, Grasshopper and Wil respectively, along with a 3-3 draw with Dinamo Kiev.

The hosts have failed to beat Young Boys in each of their previous six meetings though, losing five of these encounters.

Onto Young Boys, and the visitors will also be quietly confident about their chances in this season-opener against Luzern having held the upper hand over their hosts in the previous exchanges between the two clubs.

Young Boys also enhanced their chances of progressing further in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League in midweek as they held Slovakian outfit, Slovan Bratislava, to a 0-0 draw in the 1st leg of their 2nd qualifying round tie.

The visitors have also enjoyed a relatively solid pre-season as well, with Young Boys losing just one of their four matches which was to Rheindorf Altach but they also picked up wins against Neuchatel Xamax 4-1 and a 2-0 win against Dutch side, Feyenoord as well.

The bigger picture shows that Young Boys have lost just two of their last 14 matches in all competitions, winning 10 of these games, whilst scoring 2 goals or more in 11 of these 14 matches as well.

In last season’s Super League, Young Boys won the domestic top flight title at a canter, winning 10 of their final 11 matches of the season which saw them win the league by a comprehensive 31-point margin over runners-up, Basel.

To sum up, Young Boys should grab the spoils in this season-opener at Luzern.
