The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo commences this week and although they had to be postponed, this opening clash in Group D between Brazil U23 and Germany U23 promises to be worth the wait as the two favourites in the group go head-to-head at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.

Brazil U23 have held a pretty consistent record on the international stage for some time as the South Americans have suffered just the two defeats out of their previous 23 matches in all competitions and includes a 3-0 victory over arch-rivals, Argentina U23, in a recent pre-Olympic tournament.

Since that victory, Brazil U23 have registered wins against Korea Republic and UAE U23 in international friendlies although Andre Jardine’s side did slip to an unexpected 2-1 loss to Egypt U23 in between the two friendly wins.

Brazil’s personnel includes a few familiar faces from the English Premier League with the likes of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli and Everton’s Richarlison, with the latter looking to overcome the disappointment of Brazil’s recent Copa America loss in the final to Argentina.

Onto Germany U23 and Stefan Kuntz’s side have a youthful and fresh look about the side coming into these Tokyo Olympics and they’ll be keen to get off to a positive start against the other favourites in Group D, Brazil, and also see how they benchmark themselves against their opposition.

Germany are expected to keep numbers behind the ball against Brazil and try and limit the space in the middle of the park for Brazil, while trying to hit the Brazilians on the counter-attack with their pacy forwards such as Ache, Richter and Teuchert.

Experienced old-hand, Max Kruse may also figure in Germany’s attacking personnel and although he now lacks the pace that he used to possess, his experience and clinical finishing in the box still poses a serious threat.

Wolfsburg midfielder, Max Arnold, will add plenty of experience and know-how to the German engine room as this U23 side look to avenge the heartbreaking defeat that Brazil U23 inflicted upon them in the previous Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil U23 beat Germany U23 on penalties after the scores were level at 1-1 and whilst this upcoming clash won’t go to penalties, the spoils may well be shared in this opening group match.
