Goals on the cards in clash between Ferencvaros and Zalgiris

This week sees the start of the 1st legs of the 2nd qualifying round in the Champions League and features the clash between Hungarian side, Ferencvaros, and Lithuanian outfit, Zalgiris, both of whom progressed through the 1st qualifying round.

Looking at Ferencvaros first, and although the domestic top flight season has yet to start, the hosts are currently enjoying an impressive nine-match winning streak which not only includes winning their last four matches of last season’s NB1 League but also included home and away wins against Kosovan outfit, Prishtina, in the previous round of the Champions League.

Crushing 3-0 and 3-1 victories over the Kosovo club ensured Ferencvaros a safe passage into this 2nd qualifying round of the competition while goals have also featured in Ferencvaros’s recent successes.

Seven of Ferencvaros’s last nine games overall have resulted in over 2.5 goals being scored and along with an overall unbeaten run of 156 matches in all competitions, Ferencvaros look set for further success here as well.

Ferencvaros made it through to the group stage of last season’s Champions League and although they finished bottom of a tough Group G which comprised of Juventus, Barcelona and Dynamo Kyiv, that experience will nevertheless have been valuable.

Zalgiris pipped Lithuanian counterparts, Suduva, to last season’s Lithuanian A Lyga title and thus saw the visitors qualify for the qualifying rounds of the Champions League where they secured their passage through to this 2nd qualifying round after beating Irish club, Linfield.

Home and away wins in 3-1 and 2-1 victories respectively handed Zalgiris a 5-2 aggregate win but they now face a tricky two-legged tie against the Hungarian champions, Ferencvaros, starting with this 1st leg on Tuesday night in Budapest.

Zalgiris also being an impressive sequence of results into this upcoming tie having put together a 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions, winning 10 of these games which included six wins in the domestic top flight which helped Zalgiris claim the league title.

However, although Zalgiris came through the 1st qualifying round unscathed with wins in each leg against Linfield, the visitors possess limited experience at Champions League level, having played just 14 ties in total.

That said, Zalgiris could well have a goal in them and with five of Zalgiris’s seven away ties in the Champions League to date also resulting in over 2.5 goals, further goals look to be on the cards for this 1st leg.
