The start of the Danish Superliga season commences this weekend and Sunday evening features the clash between Aarhus and Brondby at the Ceres Park & Arena ground with both teams keen to get their season off to a winning start.

Aarhus (or AGF) enjoyed a solid campaign in last season’s Superliga as the hosts achieved a creditable 3rd place finish and three points above 4th placed Copenhagen, which saw AGF progress to the Championship Round group when the domestic top flight split into two at the end of the regular season.

However, Aarhus were unable to maintain the positive momentum that they’d built towards the end of the regular season and they were ultimately overtaken by Copenhagen by some margin after AGF managed to win just three of their subsequent 10 matches in the Championship Round.

These three victories were recorded against bottom side, Randers (home and away) and second from bottom Nordsjaelland, while six defeats within this period condemned AGF to a disappointing 4th place finish.

Within these losses was a 2-1 defeat at home to Brondby whom they’ve failed to beat in each of their previous three meetings.

By contrast, Brondby enjoyed an extremely successful campaign in last season’s Superliga, finishing top of the domestic top flight at both the end of the regular season and then top of the Championship Round group, albeit by a margin of a single point ahead of runners-up, Midtjylland.

Brondby managed to hold their nerve in what was an extremely competitive Championship Round but they won five of their 10 matches in this second phase of the season, recording wins against Nordsjaelland (home and away), Randers, Midtjylland and Aarhus.

Although Brondby can sometimes blow a bit ‘hot or cold’ on their travels, the visitors did pick up six wins from their last 10 away matches, failing to score just twice and keeping four clean sheets into the bargain as well.

If Brondby can keep the likes of Aarhus’s forward, Mortensesn (joint-top goalscorer last season with 13 goals) quiet, then this could go a long way to Brondby picking up all three points here, especially as the visitors have retained forwards, Uhre (13 goals) and Hedlund (5 goals) for this new season.

Given Aarhus’s implosion towards the end of last season, Brondby look the more likely for the three points on Sunday.
