Chile and Paraguay set for stalemate in Copa America Group A

Chile and Paraguay sit second and third respectively in Copa America Group A. The Chileans have flattered to decisive as their ageing golden generation has not been up to the races.

Coach Martin Lasarte’s team started off the tournament with a 1-1 draw versus Argentaina as they came from behind. A 1-0 win over Copa America Group A’s worst team Bolivia followed before a 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

Paraguay, on the other hand, came from behind to defeat Bolivia 3-1 to kick off the tournament. All three goals were scored in the final 28 minutes to overcome a 1-0 first half deficit.

Eduardo Berizzo’s team followed up the win by losing 1-0 to Argentina.

Now, the two South American rivals will do battle with second place in Group A on the line. While both teams should qualify for the quarterfinals, they will want to finish first or second.

This will allow them to (most likely) avoid Brazil and Colombia in the quarterfinals.

Finishing first in Group A would allow one lucky team to avoid Brazil until the final – if the Selecao finish first in Group B. No team at the Copa America will fancy playing the red-hot Brazilians right now.

Chile and Paraguay have played 63 times in their histories with the teams splitting the wins 27 apiece. Nine other matches between the national teams finished in draws.

Paraguay have actually won the last two matches versus Chile by a combined score of 5-1.

Lasarte will hope striker Eduardo Vargas can remain hot in the team’s final group game versus Paraguay. Vargas has netted two goals in three Copa America games.

He is likely to play next to Ben Brereton in attack. The duo has accounted for all three of Chile’s goals at the Copa America.

Alexis Sanchez will miss the game and is unlikely to return until the semifinals at the earliest. It was hoped he would shake off a foot injury sooner, but that doesn’t look possible right now.

Meanwhile Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel will anchor the team’s spine.

Paraguay have a capable attack with Angel Romero as the main goal threat. He has scored two of the team’s three goals at the tournament.

Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron will line-up behind Romero as the main goal creator in the side.

Despite the potential match winners in the team, Thursday’s game (Friday European time) could finish in a scoreless stalemate.

Chile have not set the tournament on fire in front of goal. They have played well defensively and Thursday’s game could be another low-scoring affair with the points shared.
