Switzerland and Turkey Both Need a Win to Keep Hopes Alive

We have reached the third round of fixtures in the group stage of the 2021 European Championship. On the 20th of June we have a meeting between Switzerland and Turkey at the Olympic Stadium, in Baku.

This is a Group A match and as things stand in the group, Italy are top on 6 points, with Wales second on 4 points, Switzerland third with 1 point and Turkey yet to get off the mark at the bottom of the group.

Switzerland come into the game on the back of a 3-0 defeat against Italy in Rome.

The Italians went into the match as the favourites to take maximum points but Switzerland will be disappointed with their level of performance and never really troubled the opposition.

Italy controlled the game and took the lead after 26 minutes before doubling their advantage early in the second half. The Swiss could not create a good goal scoring opportunity and Italy finished the job with a third goal one minute from time.

That result means Switzerland have picked up just a single point from their two matches having been held to a draw by Wales in their opening fixture.

Switzerland have a poor recent record at the European Championship and trends show they have failed to win any of their last 5 games in the competition.

They have also seen under 2.5 goals scored in their 6 most recent European Championship matches, failing to score more than a single goal in each of their last 6 games.

Turkey are currently bottom of the group having fallen to a 2-0 defeat against Wales on Wednesday night.

The Turks struggled to cope with the movement of the Welsh attackers and the final score could easily have been more, especially if Wales had taken their opportunity from the penalty spot.

That loss came on the back of a 3-0 defeat in Italy, another game in which Turkey struggled to impose themselves and they now face a mammoth task to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Scoring goals has been an issue for Turkey and they have failed to find the back of the net in 3 of their last 4 matches, including the friendly against Guinea.

Trends show Turkey have lost 4 of their last 5 matches at the European Championship and they have failed to score in 4 of their last 5 European Championship games.

Team news and Switzerland could hand a start to Mario Gavranović, who has come off the bench in the previous two games. Xherdan Shaqiri has been substituted in both fixtures and Ruben Vargas could be given an opportunity in his place.

Turkey are sure to bring Merih Demiral back into the starting XI having been on the bench against Wales. Enes Ünal will be hoping to get an opportunity in attack.
