Atlanta to struggle at home against Philadelphia

Sunday afternoon’s all-Eastern Conference clash between Atlanta United and Philadelphia Union wraps up this weekend’s MLS schedule at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the hosts sitting just outside of the top seven in the division and eager to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

A 1-0 home win over Montreal has been complemented by points picked up in draws with Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders and Nashville and the hosts have been stubborn so far this season, losing just once in their opening seven matches of the new term.

Results at home have also improved in recent times for Atlanta United who are unbeaten in their last four games at home, winning three of these matches with victories over Cincinnati, Chicago Fire and Montreal.

However, Atlanta United have won just five of their last 15 matches at home in the MLS and their inconsistent streak at home should be taken into account here especially as they’ve managed to win just one of their last three meetings at home against Sunday afternoon’s visitors, Philadelphia Union.

Philadelphia Union currently occupy 2nd place in the Eastern Conference but all three points against Atlanta United could see the visitors move top of the division if the current leaders, New England, suffer defeat away at New York City this weekend.

Following a slow and disappointing start to this new Major League Soccer campaign which saw Philadelphia winless in their opening three games of the new season, the visitors have since staged a solid recovery by putting together a decent looking five-match unbeaten run.

This encouraging sequence of results include four wins against Chicago Fire 2-0 away, New York Red Bulls 1-0 at home, DC United 1-0 away and a comprehensive 3-0 home win over mid-table Western Conference side, Portland Timbers.

The bigger picture shows that Philadelphia Union have lost just four out of their last 17 matches overall in the MLS and it’s interesting to note that three of these four losses were inflicted upon The Union on home turf at their Subaru Park.

Results on the road have also been fairly solid too as Philadelphia have lost just twice in their previous 10 matches on their travels which includes winning their last two away games on the trot.

Atlanta United have stuttered at home while Philadelphia have been hard to beat on the road.
