France and Germany face off in Euro 2020 group of death
11502

France and Germany go head-to-head in Munich on Tuesday as the two heavyweights of European football wrap up the opening round of Euro 2020 matches.

Among the bookmakers’ favourites to win the tournament, France and Germany are in the so-called “group of death” – alongside Portugal and Hungary.

Didier Deschamps’ side head into the European Championship on a seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

The French have claimed two 3-0 wins in the lead-up to the tournament, getting the better of both Wales and Bulgaria.

In actual fact, France have only lost one of their previous 20 matches in all competitions – securing 16 wins and three draws in the process.

Trends also show that Deschamps’ men have gone into half-time in each of their last 16 games without trailing.

Olivier Giroud has enhanced his impressive international goalscoring record in the lead-up to the tournament, netting a double last time out.

The Chelsea striker has bagged 46 goals in 108 appearances for France, including four in his previous four.

On the flip side, Germany crushed Latvia 7-1 in their final warm-up game – with seven different players getting on the scoresheet.

Joachim Low’s men racked up 24 shots (9 on target) while enjoying 75% possession in a completing dominant display.

However, the Germans haven’t exactly produced too many positive performances in their recent encounters.

Low’s side have only managed to win three of their previous six games in all competitions, recording one draw and two losses along the way.

Following a 6-0 Nations League thrashing at the hands of back Spain in November 2020, Germany suffered a shock 2-1 loss to North Macedonia in World Cup qualifying.

Head-to-head: In the previous five meetings between France and Germany, Deschamps’ side haven’t suffered any losses (3 wins, 2 draws).

Germany’s last victory over France came all the way back in 2014, while the French have kept three clean sheets in five meetings since then.

Team news: Following a six-year exile, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is back in the France squad. He is likely to start alongside Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann in attack.

As for Germany, they have welcomed back veteran duo Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller for the European Championship.

It is worth pointing out that only one of the last 16 meetings between France and Germany has produced over 2.5 goals.

Given that neither side can afford to lose their opening match, we are likely to see another tense affair in Munich.

For that reason, Forebet predicts that France and Germany will play out a low-scoring draw on Tuesday.
