Poland and Slovakia hoping to make their mark on Group E

Group E rivals Poland and Slovakia kick off their Euro 2020 campaigns at Saint Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena on Monday.

With Spain and Sweden also competing in Group E, both Poland and Slovakia will be eager to win their opening match.

Poland head into the European Championship on a poor run, having won just one of their previous seven games in all competitions.

Following back-to-back draws with Russia and Iceland earlier in the month, Poland are also enduring a three-match winless streak.

In terms of the Euros, Poland have only managed to win two of their last 11 games. Interesting, each of those matches produced under 2.5 goals.

If Poland are to qualify from Group E and reach the knockout phase, Robert Lewandowski will need to bring his A-game into the tournament.

The Bayern Munich striker recently enjoyed another stellar campaign with the Bavarians, bagging 48 goals and nine assists across 40 matches during the 2020/21 season.

Meanwhile, Group E underdogs Slovakia head into Euro 2020 as one of the bookmakers’ highest-priced teams.

Despite their outsider tag, the Slovakians are actually enjoying a five-game unbeaten in streak at the moment.

That said, they have drawn four of their previous five outings and only scored over 1.5 goals on two occasions during that period.

Slovakia will be relying on Serie A stars Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan) and Stanislav Lobotka (Napoli) to shine this summer.

If their big-name players fail to fulfill their potential, Slovakia will almost certainly struggle to make it past the group stage.

Head-to-head: Poland and Slovakia last faced each other back in 2013, with Slovakia claiming a 2-0 friendly victory on that occasion.

In fact, Slovakia have only lost one of their last five meetings with Poland – recording three wins and a draw in that time.

Team news: Juventus’ Wojciech Szczesny is set to start in goal for Poland, with Southampton’s Jan Bednarek expected to feature in the backline.

Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka is Slovakia’s number one. Further up the field, the legendary Marek Hamsik still plays a key role in his country’s midfield.

With so much at stake, both Poland and Slovakia are likely to approach their tournament opener with caution.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Poland and Slovakia will produce a low-scoring draw on Monday.
