Six weeks of the Major League Soccer regular season are in the books. Two MLS clubs have shown their early strength in the league as both Sporting KC and New York City top their respective conferences.

Sporting lead the Western Conference after securing 13 of 18 possible points. The Midwest club has collected four wins, one draw and a loss this term. Although defensively the team has given up nine goals, the attack has registered 12 strikes. Sporting's defence has improved leaps and bounds since week 4. The team has kept two straight clean sheets with wins over DC United and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Even when Sporting were hemorrhaging goals in the opening weeks of the term, the club was winning in high scoring fixtures. In weeks 3 through 4, Sporting's matches saw a combined 16 goals scored.

Sporting currently lead the league in shots per game. However, it is surprising that the team's leading scorer is defensive midfielder Felipe Gutierrez (five). The Chilean leads MLS in goals scored as well. Sporting forward Johnny Russell has scored twice, but the team has lacked scoring from its other strikers. Forwards Diego Rubio and Daniel Salloi only have one goal apiece. If Sporting want to hold off the rest of the Western Conference and post the best overall MLS points total, the forwards must score more goals.

New York City currently lead the Eastern Conference and sit on 13 points from 15 possible. NYC have given up the second fewest goals after six weeks of play (four) in MLS. The side leads MLS in possession with a whopping 56.1% as Patrick Vieira's team starve opponents of the ball. NYC have not tasted defeat this term, and the club's only blemish has been an away draw to the New England Revolution. NYC have already recorded a win against Sporting, defeating the Western Conference's best team 2-0. Wins against LA Galaxy and Orlando City followed.

NYC average two goals per game. Surprisingly, club talisman David Villa isn't the forward currently leading the club in goals. Villa has played just twice, scoring once and assisting one goal. Now 36, the Spaniard may not have long left playing with NYC. A calf injury in March prevented Villa from taking part in three matches. Once he gets back to full health, there is no doubt NYC's attack should be even better, if he can find the form he has hand in years previous.

Offseason signing Ismael Tajouri is NYC's current leading scorer with three goals. Signed from Austria Vienna in the offseason, Tajouri is once again proof that good scouting in MLS and coaching can uncover high-quality players at the league's level.

The MLS season should still have plenty of ups and downs. After just six weeks, there are still a lot of storylines to unfold.
