There seem to be questions at Everton over whether the team has progressed this season under the experienced Carlo Ancelotti.

On Saturday night, the Toffees hosted Aston Villa with the chance to move into the Premier League’s top-six. However, the game proved to be another missed opportunity for the Merseysider’s who just cannot find consistency to results or form, as they went down to a 2-1 defeat.

The fact that the Toffees are even in the race for European football tells you a lot about the inconsistency of the teams around them this season.

A place in Europe for next season is so tantalising, yet every time they get a chance to enhance their credentials, they slip up.

Their home form has been especially poor this season, as only Sheffield United and Fulham have won fewer matches on home soil this season in the Premier League. That poor form on their own patch contrasts greatly with their results and form on the road.

In fact, only Premier League champions-elect Manchester City have won more away games this season in the English top-flight. Winning ten away games in the top-flight should be the sort of form that has a team challenging at the top of the table.

However, due to their woeful form on home soil, the Toffees could miss out on European action next season.

It seemed at the start of the season that the wily Ancelotti had turned things around, but a glut of recent injuries has hampered the Toffees chances of progressing this season. Injuries to the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez have been most impactful, as the pair have been two of the Merseysider’s best players since joining in the summer.

Ancelotti still has a major job on his hands to turn things around at Everton. One of the first issues he needs to sort is the teams woeful home form because at the moment it is simply not good enough for a team hoping to progress in the near future.
