Lionel Messi reaches 300 La Liga goals

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi reached yet another landmark moment in his career scoring his 300th La Liga goal against Sporting Gijon in a 3-1 win on Wednesday evening. The Argentinian international was not happy with just 300 goals though, as he added a second goal, before Luis Suarez added a third goal in the second half.

The 28-year-old is La Liga’s all-time top scorer and is now 50 goals clear of Athletic Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra, who is in second-place. A certain Cristiano Ronaldo is in third-place, but looks unlikely to catch the Argentine, as Messi is two and a half years younger than the former-Manchester United star.

Messi has spent time on the sidelines injured this season, but has still scored 31 goals for club and country. The Argentinian international is likely to add many more goals to his tally before the end of the current campaign.

Messi’s Blaugrana teammate Luis Suarez also notched-up his 40th goal of the campaign in all competitions and is one of the favorites to claim the Pichichi award for the top scorer in La Liga this season. The former-Liverpool striker has now netted 24 times in 23 appearances in the Spanish top-flight.

Suarez scored his 40th goal of the season after the Uruguayan international forward had saw a penalty kick saved superbly by Ivan Cuellar. The only players to ever reach 40 goals in a season while playing for Barcelona were Brazilian superstar Ronaldo and of course Messi himself, so the Uruguayan has achieved something admirable already this season.
