Are Manchester United Title Challengers Again?

This season seems one of uncertainty in the English Premier League. At the time of writing, two of the teams in the top four having played 14 matches are Everton and Leicester City.

Manchester City find themselves in 7th place, all be it with a game in hand while Arsenal are down in 15th place, hovering above the relegation zone.

The defending champions, Liverpool are top of the table following the demolition job of Crystal Palace and Saturday and with Tottenham Hotspur losing at home against Leicester City, their closest title challenger dropped points.

However, this allowed Manchester United to move up the table into third place, 5 points behind Liverpool but with a game in hand. Their 6-2 home victory against Leeds United was impressive and has led many pundits to state Manchester United are now serious contenders to win the Premier League this season.

There was no doubting the quality of the attacking performance by the Red Devils on Sunday afternoon as they dismantled the Leeds United defence. Nonetheless, the manner in which Leeds United played the game fell nicely into the hands of Manchester United and they had the time and space required to create plenty of chances and score 6 goals.

The only negative aspect to come out of the match for the hosts was the number of chances Leeds United manage to create throughout the 90 minutes. The visitors scored 2 goals but if they had taken more of their good chances the final score could easily have been 6-4.

The result will be a huge boost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team as they were struggling at home this season. The defeats against Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal were all disappointing, both in terms of the results and performances.

The victory over Leeds United was only the second at home in the Premier League this season following the narrow 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion. There have also been goalless draws at Old Trafford against Chelsea and Manchester City but who knows, come the end of the season the 2 points gained from those games could prove crucial.

In terms of the away form in the Premier League, this is where Manchester United have excelled this season. They have won all 6 away matches and the number of goals scored has been exceptional. Manchester United have scored 3 goals at Brighton, Everton, Southampton, West Ham United, and Sheffield United. They also netted 4 in a win at Newcastle United.

There are some tough fixtures on the horizon including Leicester City away, Liverpool away, plus Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa at home.

Should Manchester United defeat Liverpool at Anfield, it would send out a huge statement of intent this season and cement their credentials as serious contenders for the Premier League title.
