On Sunday afternoon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United suffered a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Tottenham at Old Trafford. The early dismissal of French forward Anthony Martial did not help the Red Devils, but in truth, they were woeful against former head coach Jose Mourinho’s team.
A defence that cost just under £200million seemed to fall over themselves to make a mess of things against Spurs. In fact, centre-back Harry Maguire literally pushed full-back, Luke Shaw, out the way for one of the Tottenham goals. It was the sort defensive display that gives head coaches nightmares.
Solskjaer has a big nightmare on his hands, as his team looked poor and the potential signing of veteran Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani is unlikely to solve the problems in that Red Devils team.
United’s attack were not great against Spurs, but they were massively hamstrung by Martial’s silly red card. They will produce better displays in attack the future. The quality is there in attack.
It is in their defence were the big problems lie. Media reports suggest that United are closing in on the signing of Porto full-back Alex Telles. The Brazilian will no doubt add some depth to the squad. However, it seems a case of too little too late for United in the transfer market.
Former Manchester United star and now Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has heavily criticised his former clubs work in the transfer market. It is hard to argue with the former England international when it comes to United’s recruitment.
The signing of midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax seemed a strange one, as it was an area of the pitch that they were well covered in already. The Dutchman is a good player, but it was not a priority position to strengthen and neither is in attack, even if Cavani comes with a high-profile and big reputation.
With today being the European transfer deadline day it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils do manage to strengthen their squad.
With time running out it seems unlikely that they will be able to bring in enough quality to vastly improve the weak areas of the team.
