Is Manchester United goalkeeper worth his place at Old Trafford?

David De Gea put in an absolute shocker for Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinals versus Chelsea on Sunday as the team went out with a whimper 3-1.
The Spanish goalkeeper is the Premier League's highest paid player at £375,000-per-week and has been deemed as the most important player to suit up for the team. Yet, displays like Sunday's have become almost too common for De Gear.
His choice as No. 1 should be on shaky ground as Manchester United's best goalkeeper of the lot is currently on loan at Sheffield United.Dean Henderson has stepped up to the Premier League level and shone this season keeping 13 clean sheets.
Manchester United, who previously signed Alexis Sanchez to the league's biggest contract and regretted it, did the same with De Gea having little foresight into the future. Suddenly, a player was more important than the rest of the club, especially a player they had previously tried to sell.
Now, with his large contract, what clubs are in the position to buy De Gea? More accurately, which club want or need to sign De Gea?
Sure, De Gea has 12 Premier League clean sheets, yet look at the difference in teams the two goalkeepers play for. Say what you want about Manchester United’s defence, but they are still a top five – possibly four – side.
Sheffield United have punched above their weight all season long. Remarkably, both clubs, after 36 league games, conceded just 35 goals. Again, look at the differences in quality and salary between those two sides and you can see which club are getting the most for their money.
By the way, 29 of those 35 Sheffield United goals conceded were allowed by Henderson, who wasn’t allowed to play against Manchester United. What resulted was the Red Devils scoring six goals past the Blades without Henderson in net.
Henderson has made 95 saves this campaign to De Gea’s 91. Henderson has conceded a goal (after 36 games) every 105.5 minutes of football. He makes a save every 32.2 minutes.
De Gea has allowed all 35 Manchester United goals playing 3,240 minutes. He has conceded a goal in 2019-20 every 92.5 minutes while making a save every 35.6 minutes. He has conceded more goals from fewer shots. That isn’t a good sign, is it?
De Gea makes £19.5m a season at Old Trafford while the entire 2019-20 Sheffield United squad earns £12.2m. Henderson alone makes £10,000-per-week, or just over £500,000 a year.
So, which player would you rather have in goal? De Gea’s a liability not worth having with a 23-year-old star in the making on loan to Sheffield United.
