Liverpool will be Premier League champions
2705

For much of the Premier League campaign, it was inevitable that Liverpool would win the title. When coronavirus put football on hold throughout the world, the Reds were 25 points clear at the top of the table.

Jurgen Klopp’s team had not mathematically won their first title in three decades. However, it would be unrealistic to say that any other team would have caught them.

FIFA head Aleksander Ceferin has now stated that he does not believe the Reds will be denied a long-awaited title. It seems like an obvious thing to say. However, there have been people calling for the Premier League campaign to be voided, expunging the whole of the season's results.

That seemed like a fanciful notion or a dream of rival clubs and fans throughout the country. Liverpool as a football club are not the most popular among neutrals, which is easy to forget sometimes. They often shot themselves in the foot.

The latest high-profile gaffe was the Reds attempting to use the UK governments furlough scheme to pay 80 per cent of their non-playing staffs wages. There was a public outcry and the Merseysider’s had to produce an embarrassing U-turn on the matter.

Love them or loathe them, Liverpool will one way or another be crowned English champions. That may be on the pitch when it is safe to return, or with the last resort of awarding the title to Klopp’s team without another kick of a ball.

Nobody knows when football will return from its coronavirus induced hiatus. Whatever happens in the near future, this is not the way Liverpool will have wanted to end their long wait for an English championship trophy.

When, not if Liverpool win the title, then there is unlikely to be any big trophy presentation or bus parade. Instead, it will almost feel like a shallow victory considering the current situation, which is a shame for a team that has deserved the top-flight title this season.
