Who Should Win Premier League Player of the Season if it Ended Now?

The 2019/20 English Premier League season has been suspended due to coronavirus with a potential resumption date set of the 30th of April.

However, given the current situation in the United Kingdom which has seen freedom of movement reduced for citizens, this date now seems very unlikely to be met.

That leaves the Premier League with a difficult decision as to how they are going to conclude this season. Unless things improve dramatically over the next 6 weeks, it may be the case that we have seen the last of the Premier League for this campaign. Who should win the Premier League Player of the Season if it ended now?

Virgil van Dijk won the award last season and it was the first time the defender picked up the Premier League Player of the Season since Vincent Kompany in 2011/12. The Dutch defender has continued where he left off last season and has commanded Liverpool’s defence expertly over the course of the 29 matches they have played.

Much is made of the Liverpool attacking threat but it is in defence where they excelled again this season. They have the best defensive record in the League and that is thanks in large part to Van Dijk.

Remaining with Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold must also be in consideration for the award. The English full back is also part of the most successful defence in the Premier League but has produced 12 assists this season. That places him second for assists in the league and he is also third for the highest number of successful passes played. Although it is Van Dijk who is far and away the leader in that category.

The only player above Alexander-Arnold in the assists column this season is Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester City midfielder has been in superb form despite the fact the club have fallen behind in the title race. The Belgian has also chipped in with his fair share of goals and has continued to push Manchester City forward despite their struggles to retain the title this season. In terms of pure footballing ability, there can be no doubt that De Bruyne is currently the best player in the Premier League.

Returning to Liverpool and there has been plenty of claim, especially in the English press, for Jordan Henderson to be given the award. He impressed in the Champions League for Liverpool last season and has carried over that form into the current Premier League campaign. It is said that you can see how valuable a player is when he is not in the team and that's been the case with Henderson this season. Liverpool’s drop in form coincided with the absence of the central midfielder and many of his teammates would probably vote for Henderson as the Premier League player of the season.

The four players above are all standout candidates to win the Premier League player of the season award if it ended now. In truth, it would probably be the same four players if the season was played to a conclusion.
