On Sunday, Lazio hosted Inter at the Stadio Olimpico, in what was undoubtedly the biggest of game of the weekend in Serie A.
The pair are two of the three protagonists in the race for the Scudetto this season. The pressure was on, as leaders Juventus had recorded a 2-0 win over Brescia earlier in the day.
Therefore, the game was a massive one and it didn’t disappoint. The first half was nip and tuck, but a counter-attack goal from Ashley Young sent Inter in at the break a goal up.
Lazio had to respond and they showed why they are in the title race through a penalty kick by top goalscorer Ciro Immobile and a well-taken strike from highly-rated midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic were enough to earn Simone Inzaghi’s team a 2-1 win.
The victory epitomised Lazio. Milinkovic-Savic produced the sort of display which showed why a couple of years ago several major clubs were queuing up to sign him.
He offered that touch of quality when Lazio needed it most. Not only did he score the winning goal, but he also kept possession when his team needed him to. Some may say it was the Serbian’s best game of the season for the Eagles.
Everybody worked hard and Inzaghi’s team dug in defensively to earn what could be a vital result in the race to become Italian champions. Centre-back Francesco Acerbi also deserves major praise as he produced some brave blocks. Although it would be unfair to single out any particular player in such a good performance.
The victory moved Lazio up to second in the table and just a point behind leaders Juventus and two points ahead of Inter. The team from the Italian capital are also now 19 games unbeaten in Serie A.
The victory over Inter proved that Inzaghi’s team really do look like they have what it takes to give Juventus a serious challenge for the Scudetto this season.
