Liverpool look set to run away with the Premier League title this season after an incredible 4-0 demolition of supposed title rivals Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day. The win leaves Jurgen Klopp’s team 13 points clear at the top of the table.
While Liverpool’s attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are their usual source of goals (Firmino scored at brace at Leicester), full-back Trent Alexander Arnold has also become a major attacking threat.
Not only did the youngster seal the Reds win with the fourth goal, but he also picked up a hat-trick of assists too. That means that the England international now has eight top-flight assists in the Premier League this season. Only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who has ten assists, can better the full-backs assist tally in the English top-flight. It is a superb attacking return for a player who is a defender by trade.
His ability to produce set-pieces is also another string to Alexander-Arnold’s substantial bow. The 21-year-old local lad has a wand of a left foot and rather scarily for opponents, he still has massive potential to improve in the near future.
While attacking play now plays a big part in a full-backs game, defending is their bread and butter, and that is maybe where the youngster can improve his game. He is a good defender, with pace to burn. However, his positioning and his urgency to get back when Liverpool do not have the ball needs improvement.
Alexander-Arnold has the pace to get back obviously at 21 he is physically in good shape, so there is an improvement to be made there. However, that would be nit-picking because the youngster plays a key role in the way Liverpool plays.
There are few full-backs in the world game that can contribute to attacking play the way that Alexander-Arnold does. If the youngster is not already the best full-back in the world game, then he is certainly on his way there.
