Group D of Euro 2020 on a knife-edge
2813
Last night’s result in Group D of qualifying for Euro 2020 of Switzerland 2-0 Republic of Ireland was a massive one in the context of qualification.
The victory leaves three teams the Republic of Ireland, Denmark and Switzerland in with a chance of qualifying with just a few qualifiers left.
The Republic of Ireland are currently top of the group on 12 points, but Denmark also has 12 points and a game in-hand. The pair meet in Ireland in November in the Republic’s last outing in qualifying. Nothing but a win will do for Mick McCarthy’s team, any other result would mean advantage Denmark in the race for automatic qualification for next years tournament.
Switzerland are a point behind the leading pair. However, they have a big advantage as their remaining games are a home match against Georgia and a trip to hapless Gibraltar in their last qualifier.
The three teams were always going to battle it out for those two top spots and likely a play-off spot. However, the way it has panned out will make the last few games of qualifying utterly fascinating.
None of the teams have run away with the group, instead taking points off each other and suffering disappointing results in the process.
All three teams are old hands at international tournaments. Denmark and the Republic have also featured in play-offs for big tournaments in recent years. However, all three teams will be keen to secure an automatic spot at the European Championships, as the play-offs can offer heartbreak.
The majority of other groups have seen teams qualify for Euro 2020 or some teams are at least close to sealing their spot at next years big international tournament. However, we are none the wiser as to who will qualify for Euro 2020 from Group D, which only adds excitement for the neutral, but not so much for the teams involved.
