Dortmund missed a golden opportunity to end Bayern’s dominance

On Saturday afternoon, reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich clinched their seventh straight successive German top-flight title.
This season was different from recent campaigns in the Bundesliga, though, as the Bavarians did not run away with the title.
Instead, arch-rivals Dortmund pushed Niko Kovac’s team to the final day of the campaign. In truth, BVB threw away the chance of ending Bayern’s Bundesliga domination.
Lucien Favre’s team were superb for much of the season and finished just two points behind the reigning champions in the end. A 4-2 home defeat against Ruhr rivals Schalke at the end of last month proved to be one of the most decisive results in the title race.
Bayern found a superb level of consistency in the final months of the season, that in the end proved slightly better than Dortmund’s. There must be a feeling of missed opportunity at Dortmund.
Not only did Dortmund push Bayern all the way for the title, but they also played some fantastic football in doing so.
One of the key factors in BVB’s stellar campaign was the form of England winger Jadon Sancho. The 19-year-old featured in all 34 Bundesliga games, scoring 12 goals and producing 14 assists in the German top-flight. The winger's form has led to the former Manchester City attracting the interest of a number of high-profile clubs.
BVB could lose the starlet and then would have to replace him. With USA starlet Christian Pulisic also leaving, Dortmund could have to rebuild again, even if Pulisic has not always been a regular in the first-team this season.
Bayern Munich will be determined to retain their top-flight crown next season, so will no doubt bring in enough quality this summer to make sure that they will enjoy a more dominant campaign next season.
The Bavarians bringing in more quality this summer will be bad news for Dortmund, who came so close to ending Bayern’s domination.
