Manchester United ended a poor Premier League campaign by suffering a 2-0 home defeated on Sunday against already-relegated Cardiff City.

The defeat followed a 1-1 draw at another already-relegated team in Huddersfield in their previous games. The performances illustrated the lack of character and quality within the United squad.

Some may say that there was very little left to play for in either game, as the Red Devils were out of contention for a top-four finish this season. However, the team will have been expected to display some pride and show their fans some appreciation.

United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a big job ahead of him to turn things around at Old Trafford. After a stellar start to his career as United boss, the wheels have fallen off for the Norwegian.

The men from Manchester ended their Premier League campaign on a five-game winless run. The poor run of form included those aforementioned defeats against Cardiff and Huddersfield, as well as a 4-0 hammering at north west rivals Everton.

This summer will be a big one for Solskjaer and United. If media reports are to be believed then the Red Devils could dispense with the services of a number of their big-name players this summer and a number of other players.

The popular Ander Herrera has already confirmed that he will leave the club this summer as a free agent. Compatriot Juan Mata is also out of contract this summer and is likely to leave.

The two Spaniards leaving the club is not the end of the world. However, the problem Solskjaer faces is that many other players in his squad are simply not good enough to take the team to where they aspire to be.

The current squad of players have also shown that they lack the determination and character to play for a club the size of Manchester United. If the Red Devils do not get their summer business right, then they face the possibility of even falling out of the Premier League top-six next season.
