On Sunday afternoon, Manchester United suffered a 4-0 defeat at Everton’s Goodison Park. In truth, defeat was not a big enough word to describe the result, maybe mauling would be a better word to use.

Everton were simply better all over the pitch and the Red Devils had no answer to Marco Silva’s team’s hard work, pressing and quality. United, on the other hand, looked like a group of strangers cobbled together.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s team looked like a group of players already on the beach enjoying their summer holidays, despite the fact that they are still very much in the race for the Champions League spots in the Premier League.

The defeat on Merseyside means that United have now lost six of their last eight games in all competitions. The men from Manchester United have now also lost their last five away games, conceding at least two goals in each of the defeats.

Those are the statistics of a team fighting against relegation, not of a team looking to finish in the top four of one of Europe’s biggest leagues. The defeat was a reality check for Solskjaer and his team.

If it were not for the lift the Norwegian gave the team early in his reign as United boss, then the Red Devils may have easily been midtable. It seems the effect Solskjaer had during his days as interim boss was just a new boss bounce.

The current group of players underperformed for former boss Jose Mourinho, who is one of the greatest managers of the modern era. They are doing the same for the popular Solskjaer and there is a sense that big changes are around the corner at United this summer.

What the Norwegian does in the summer is crucial to how Manchester United far next year, as very few of the players on the pitch during the embarrassing display at Goodison Park look like they are good enough to represent the Red Devils.

Solskjaer will know which bad seeds need rooting out in the summer. Whether he can make the changes necessary to be successful at Old Trafford only time will tell.
