The race for the Premier League Golden Boot hots up
2021

With just six games remaining for most clubs in the Premier League, the race for the Golden Boot is an intriguing one this season. This could be a rarity in that the winner of the award could end the season with a title-winners medal.

The two favourites for the award are Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who is the holder of the award from last season. Their two teams are slugging out for the Premier League title, while the pair are competing for the individual honour.

Aguero is currently leading the pack with 19 top-flight goals this season. However, he is currently carrying an injury. The extent of the Argentine’s injury could have a big bearing on the race for the Golden Boot this season.

Main rival Salah has not quite lived up to last season’s goalscoring feats but has still managed 18 top-flight goals this season. This time around though the competition is much tougher. Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane has 17 goals, along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal and Spurs’ Harry Kane.

Aguero, Salah and Kane, on multiple occasions are previous winners. However, Mane and Aubameyang have shown themselves to be highly capable in front of goal. A change to a more central role has helped Mane to be more productive, while Aubameyang has carried his prolific goalscoring record with him from the Bundesliga.

This weekend’s action sees Salah and Mane face Chelsea at Anfield. Aguero’s Manchester City will visit Crystal Palace, while Arsenal have a trip to face Watford at Vicarage Road. Kane will be facing Huddersfield on Saturday.

All of the above players will fancy their chances of winning the award. The race for the Golden Boot just adds extra interest for the rest of the season.
